"Characterizing Substellar Atmospheres in the Era of JWST", Brittany Miles

by Jean Hayoz

Brown dwarfs are high-quality testing grounds for atmospheric models and optimizing requirements for exoplanet-focused instrumentation. These substellar atmospheres have similar atmospheric physics and chemistry as gas giant exoplanets, but are much easier to observe because they do not suffer from host star obscuration. I will cover the results of the JWST Early Release Science observations of VHS 1256b which cover 1 to 20 microns at medium resolution and show detections of water, methane, carbon monoxide and silicate cloud features. I will discuss upcoming JWST Cycle 1 and 2 observaitons to characterize convection driven disequilibrium chemistry and cloud variability in the atmospheres of the coldest known brown dwarfs.

Date/Time: Tuesday 13th of June, 5 to 6 pm (Zurich time).
